How to Cite ChatGPT in Chicago Style?

Hi peeps…

I’m working on a research paper and need to cite information I gathered from ChatGPT. I’m using the Chicago style for my citations and am unsure how to properly cite a conversation with an AI like ChatGPT.

Can anyone provide guidance on the correct format for citing this type of source in Chicago style? Should it be treated similarly to a personal interview or something else entirely?

To cite ChatGPT in Chicago style, follow this format:

OpenAI. “ChatGPT Model.” ChatGPT, August 15, 2024. https://chat.openai.com.

For footnotes or endnotes, use:

  1. OpenAI, “ChatGPT Model,” ChatGPT, August 15, 2024, https://chat.openai.com.

Always include the access date and URL, as ChatGPT is an online tool.

If your kids are writing papers, I think you should be very strict about getting sources for anything that isn’t general knowledge.
