Have you ever used ChatGPT instead of walkthroughs for gaming?

I like to keep a journal of my playthrough as I’m playing.

For example, if I’m casually playing Pokemon, I’ll tell it which party members I’m thinking of using, and it usually gives me some helpful suggestions and advice based on what’s good to use.

I find this way more engaging than just looking at a walkthrough because it feels like I’m playing with a friend who knows more about the game.

You might not always follow their advice, but it makes you think about your choices. With the new real-time search feature, you can connect it to any game walkthroughs online, so it’s really useful if the game is niche or came out a while ago.

Do you guys do this lately? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

No, I find it doesn’t always give accurate info, especially for games. It might work better for the popular ones.

It’s hit or miss, but when it works, it’s awesome. If it goes off track, you can usually guide it back by letting it know what’s wrong.

Yes, for sure. Sometimes it works great depending on the game’s complexity or how well the game is covered online.

I know how wrong ChatGPT can be, but I find some use for it in almost every part of my life. The more I use it, the better I get at knowing its strengths and when to look elsewhere.

There are times I get stuck in a game and can’t find answers on Google or YouTube, but it often points me in the right direction.

I tried using it for Slay the Spire once. I let it decide everything while I just handled the battles.

It made some pretty silly choices and gave weird reasons for them.

That was a while ago, so it might be better now.

Interesting idea! I guess it’s like asking a friend who’s not familiar with the game for tips. They might be overly confident even if they don’t know the game well.

I’m saying this because it doesn’t have training data for everything in every game. But it’s still cool because you know it’ll just guess or give hints without spoiling anything. I want to try it out.

@Reagan
With the new real-time search, you can bypass relying on training data if a guide is available.

Just search for " ign/gamefaqs x game walkthrough" and it picks from a bunch of available guides.

You might still be limited by how thorough the guides are, and it could get confused if the answer isn’t clear or your question is about something besides mechanics or progression. But so far, it’s been surprisingly good.

@Nico
Yeah, and that’s why it’s good for giving hints without spoiling anything, IF it finds the right guide and section.

Hello there! If this post is a screenshot of a ChatGPT chat, please reply with the link to the conversation.

If this post is a DALL-E 3 image, please share the prompt you used to create it.

Consider joining our public discord server. We have free bots with GPT-4 and other fun stuff!

Or maybe a local AI on your computer that watches what you’re doing on the screen. If you get stuck, just ask the AI for help.

At this rate, that might not be too far off honestly. Plus, when we have robot pets, we can have them annoy trespassers with random game facts!

@Nico
Microsoft showed something similar with Minecraft: https://youtu.be/TLg2KWY2J5c?si=ROy7O42ACS2qRDk5

I’m still waiting for the first RPG or MMO with AI-controlled NPCs.

@Case
Now I want to make a BG3 mod where GPT controls your party while you just play one character.

@Beckett
Now that you’ve shared the link, it reminds me of the Project Sid AI experiment. They let different AI models play on a Minecraft server, and they built their own civilization there.

Someone still needs to create all these walkthroughs that ChatGPT will look for info from.

Is having an IQ around 100 really so bad that you need help from a different kind of intelligence to finish a game? Maybe just stick to simpler things.

I don’t recommend using anything more advanced than basic tools.

@Shannon
What’s wrong with you?

And what’s wrong with asking for hints sometimes? You know he’s just looking for help for those rare moments when it could be useful.
