AI technology has sparked many concerns about taking over human jobs, but one company is flipping the script by using it to take down scammers. The AI mimics a senior citizen, the typical target of scammers, and keeps them on the line with long, pointless conversations that lead nowhere, much like Grandpa Simpson.

And in a year or so, it will just be two AIs chatting to each other on the phone. Fun, right?

Years ago, when I was first starting out and very immature in my first office job, I used to get calls like this. I’d pretend my boss was really interested in whatever they were selling, tell them we just had a meeting about it, and then put them on hold for a long time. After about 20-30 minutes, I’d ‘transfer them’ to my boss—who was just me and some coworkers making monkey noises and then hanging up. Thinking about it now, I wonder if I could rebuild this with AI to waste telemarketers’ time.
Well, that’s just great. Now AI is taking away my occasional entertainment.
