I came across this old 2015 podcast featuring Elon Musk and Sam Altman, and wow, it’s crazy to see how much has changed since then. They were talking about Tesla, AI, and other big ideas long before things exploded to where they are now.
Hearing them back then, you can tell how different their views and personalities were compared to now. It’s almost like listening to a different version of these two. It also gives some early insights into what would later become OpenAI.
I clipped a few highlights and posted them on my social media, just in case anyone doesn’t have time to listen to the full thing. Let me know what you think!

At 32:25, Elon says, “Hopefully Trump doesn’t get the nomination for the Republican party… that wouldn’t be good.”
It’s wild to hear him back then. He was so optimistic about things like fusion energy, Mars colonization, and self-driving cars. Compare that to now, where his public persona feels completely different. It’s strange to think this was less than a decade ago.

I always thought the Mars stuff was a bit too far-fetched. Space travel has so many challenges—it feels more like a PR stunt than a real goal.
True, but he’s managed to make some progress with SpaceX, so maybe parts of it aren’t as impossible as they seem.
@Andi
People change their views over time, especially when they’re exposed to new information or challenges. Elon might have shifted his focus, but that doesn’t erase the good ideas he’s had.
Do you think COVID changed how people like Elon and others in Silicon Valley see the world? It feels like a lot of them became way more cynical after that.
