Every time AI comes up, people either love it or hate it. But what I don’t hear enough is… where do we actually draw the line? How much AI is okay before it becomes a problem?
This hit me when I was working on an animation. Everything so far is done by hand, frame by frame, but I needed a sound effect of a chicken screaming. There aren’t a lot of those out there, and I needed different variations, so I tried running a human scream through an AI voice program to make it sound like a chicken. It worked perfectly. But then I hesitated… because, well, it’s AI.
On one hand, I still put in a ton of effort—choosing the right screams, tweaking the sounds, making it fit the animation. It’s not like I just pushed a button and got a finished product. People have used robotic voice filters for years, so what makes this different? But then I wonder… does it cross a line?
Some people say I should just hire voice actors, which I totally would if I had the money. I love working with actors—they bring unexpected magic to a project. But I’m a student, I’m broke, and I just don’t have the resources. Plus, there are some sounds a VA just can’t do.
So where do we stand on this? What about AI auto-coloring for animation, using ChatGPT for writing feedback, or AI tools for image editing? These all feel like tools that help rather than replace humans, but some people still say any AI is bad. Others say if I’m using AI for sound, why not use it for the whole thing?
Where is the line between a helpful tool and something that goes too far?
