Has ChatGPT made me lazy? Or am I just learning differently?

I’ve been using ChatGPT a lot lately, and now I’m noticing some changes in how I approach learning. I feel like I’ve lost some motivation to figure things out on my own, and I rely more on ChatGPT. I used to really enjoy solving problems after thinking through them, but now it seems easier to just ask ChatGPT for the answer. Sometimes I wonder if I’m really learning deeply anymore. I get the quick summary and move on, and I tend to forget things after a while.

On the flip side, ChatGPT does help me understand things more quickly. For example, math stuff that isn’t very intuitive for me is easier to get with ChatGPT’s explanations. It helps me build a better understanding.

I don’t know if this is making me smarter or dumber. My ability to dive deep into topics, especially math, seems to have dropped, but I’m still learning things faster. Anyone else feel like this? Thoughts?

Forum Guidelines for Discussions

Here are a few things to keep in mind when posting:

  • Make sure your post is over 100 characters – the more detail, the better!
  • Before posting, try searching the forum in case someone else has already shared their thoughts on the same topic.
    • Some topics, like AI taking our jobs, come up a lot!
  • Feel free to discuss both the good and bad sides of AI – but please keep it respectful.
  • If you have sources or links that support your points, include them.
  • Don’t post anything that might distract from the topic. Just because you disagree doesn’t mean it’s ‘stupid’!

Thanks for posting! Let the mods know if you have any questions.

Well, if you keep using it like that, you’re definitely going to be hurting your own ability to think critically. You can’t just take the answers without doing the work yourself!

ChatGPT is like fast food for the brain! It’s easy, but maybe not the best for your mental muscles.

That’s a huge question. It really depends on how you use it. If you just accept whatever ChatGPT says without thinking about it or checking other sources, that’s not going to help you in the long run!

I agree with you. I try to have a conversation with ChatGPT at least once a week about a topic I’m curious about. It’s a quick way to get up to speed compared to a full course, but it’s not a replacement for real learning.
