Hey guys,
Do you think artificial intelligence is stealing artwork from artists?
No, artificial intelligence is not stealing artwork from artists. AI may generate new artworks based on existing styles or input, but it doesn’t possess intent or consciousness to “steal.” Artists can use AI as a tool to enhance creativity or explore new possibilities, but the ownership of original work remains with the human creator.
This is actually a challenging question to answer. The debate centers around whether AI tools are infringing on artists’ rights by using their work without permission.
My argument is that these tools “scrape” the web for images, incorporating elements from existing artworks to generate new ones, which can be seen as using artists’ work without credit or compensation. Hence they are actually infringing on artists’ rights. Therefore the AI founders should see on what to do to prevent this from continuing.
I saw a Shakespeare play that was modified by removing scenes to shorten the performance, without any added or modified dialog or stage directions, and it was copyrighted by a university. I’ve seen a lot of choir music 200 years to 400 years old that is copyrighted, because some editor added a tempo or loudness markings. Not a lawyer, not legal advice, but I wonder if they are saying the AI creation is public domain so the user can’t copyright it, or if it is the case that Google claims to own a copyright, so to use it you’d have to mark it “copyright Google 2023” and pay fir a license to use it?
