Do you think AI could make languages stop changing as much? Languages have always changed through talking and interacting over time. For example, English today is very different from how it was spoken centuries ago. But if more people start using AI to help with their communication, could it make languages stay the same and stop changing? Of course, new words will still pop up for things that didn’t exist before. I’m curious what others think about this.

I don’t think AI will slow down language change. Languages will still change as cultures do, and AI won’t stop that.
I think there might only be a few main languages left in the future. There are over 7,000 languages now, but maybe only 10 will remain dominant.

I’m not so sure about that. Languages like Welsh, Irish, Catalan, and Basque have survived and even thrived despite efforts to make them disappear. If those languages can survive, then smaller ones might have hope too. Technology is helping these languages be saved and passed down.
@Ainsley
People today are more mobile than ever. Sure, languages survive if enough people speak them, but with everyone watching English or Spanish shows, it gets harder to keep using your own language.
I actually think AI will help preserve languages. In the past, things like roads, cars, books, and the internet have all helped spread dominant languages. Now, AI can help keep older languages alive by making them easier to teach and use. AI could even help families keep their heritage language at home.
Have you noticed how teens talk today? Social media and all these new ways to talk to each other are actually pushing language to evolve faster, not slower.
Actually, I believe language shapes the way people think. In the future, I think everyone will have their own language, and we’ll use AI to translate between them.

I agree with that! Every language has its own strengths. Some are better for expressing emotions, others sound nicer, and some are just easier to learn for practical reasons.

That sounds like an interesting idea for a story, but I’m not sure it will actually happen.
@Mackenzie
I don’t know if I want it to happen, but with all the new slang popping up, I can see it happening. Maybe I’ll write that story after all!
Actually, I think AI might speed up language evolution. New words, especially slang, often start because people want to stand out or show who they belong with. If AI becomes more common, the way AI talks might become the standard. Then, people will start using language that AI doesn’t, to show they’re different and original. So, I think language will keep changing. It might get annoying though. Imagine if slang becomes so complicated that only people can understand it, and AI can’t keep up!
Nope, I don’t think AI will change anything.
I think AI will actually pick up the different ways people speak. AI learns from what people say, so it will probably help languages grow, not hold them back.
I’ve seen AI pick up on new words really quickly. Sometimes, AI even makes up its own words or uses old words in new ways. So, I don’t think AI will stop language from evolving.
If history repeats itself, we might see a time of regression after a time of progress. Just like the fall of the Roman Empire led to the Dark Ages, we could end up in a situation where languages go backwards. AI might not matter in the long run. Who knows, maybe the internet won’t even exist in a few centuries.
I love being able to talk to people in different languages. Translation has gotten so much better, and I think it’ll only improve. AI might even help more people learn new languages.
I think AI will slow down language change just a little. People are already copying the way AI speaks, and since AI doesn’t always keep up with how language changes, there will be a small gap that could make things slower. That’s just my feeling about it.
I think it will. I’m already seeing people speak in more robotic ways because of all the technology around us.
